Last Chance for Radio on Sky
This is the last chance for broadcasters wishing to access Sky in the UK via the UK's premier direct to home platform, Sky Digital, in 9 million homes in the UK and Ireland.

In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky. Citing limitations of legacy set top box capacity, BSkyB announced a closure of the platform.

Since then, any new radio broadcaster wishing to access the EPG has had to undertake a private purchase of an EPG number from an existing station on the platform. These opportunities have been very few and far between.

However, WRN has one channel available either for sale or for hire. Radio broadcasters will be able to benefit from instant access to the otherwise-closed Sky platform, uplink and 128 kbps stereo capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, an Ofcom licence, EPG management and submission services and 24/7 monitoring and support.

This opportunity is limited and will expire within the next 30 days. For more information please contact sales@wrn.org

Broadcast Video Expo
Broadcast Video Expo is opening this week, held between 16-18 February at Earls Court.

BVE's are a fantastic opportunity for leading audio and video manufacturers and suppliers to exhibit their organisations and meet with forward-thinking media leaders.

For more information, refer to www.broadcastvideoexpo.co.uk and to schedule an appointment with a member of the WRN Commercial Team, email sales@wrn.org

Sky getting ready to announce 10 million subscribers
Predictions are running high that Sky will hit its target of 10 million subscribers in the last quarter of this year. The Royal Bank of Scotland has even gone as far as advising clients to snap up shares in the satellite broadcaster, claiming that the future of BSkyB is so bright that you "will need sunglasses".

Although the broker believes that growth in customer numbers will moderate from then on, it argues that a number of new product launches, especially three-dimensional technology - hence the sunglasses metaphor - will boost revenues. Sky is launching a 3D TV channel this year and rumours at 2009's MIPCOM and IBC conferences suggest that there are another 9 channels on the way.

Sky is still the most desirable platform for broadcasters to reach audiences throughout the UK with no sign of audience figures slowing down. For more information about how WRN can launch you on Sky, contact sales@wrn.org

The channel is available either for sale or for hire.

Radio broadcasters will be able to benefit from an instant access to the otherwise-closed Sky platform, uplink and 128 kbps stereo capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, an Ofcom licence, EPG management and submission services and 24/7 monitoring and support.

Opportunity subject to contract and availability. For more information please contact sales@wrn.org.

Re:broadcast > December 2009

WRN Round Up of 2009
As the year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the achievements and successes of the previous 12 months. At a time of global economic recession during which many other companies are contracting, WRN has been expanding and 2009 marks a year of milestones for the company.

Radio is and always will be part of our core business and the World Radio Network remains an important part of both our heritage and our future. There have been a multitude of highlights in 2009 and these have included the launch of the new listener website (more info on this below); the addition of programming from Swissinfo, Danger Zone and Deutsche Welle to the WRN English network schedules and the arrival of NHK on WRN Arabic. This is in addition to special features such as the celebration of the anniversary of the People's Republic of China for Radio Guangdong.

WRN would like to thank you, our rebroadcast clients, for your ongoing commitment to WRN. We look forward to continuing to deliver you the global voices and diverse views of our network clients into 2010 and beyond.

WRN Launches new Website
WRN has recently launched its new website at www.wrn.org, providing a much improved and updated listener portal, streaming World Radio Network content live and on demand and featuring more enhanced, personalised and user-friendly functionality for our network listeners.

The listener site allows users the option to register an account, to set up personalised play-lists of on-demand radio shows and leave instant comments next to each programme. A similar feature attached to the WRN in-built player means that listeners can leave tags inside a show. These tags are attached to certain times as the show is played out, and listeners comments might refer to the start of a particular topic or just be a shared thought on a subject raised in the show.

If you have any feedback on the new website we would love to hear from you. Please send your emails to contactus@wrn.org

WRN was responsible for securing the broadcast for RNW; it has a long standing relationship with this station, having successfully launched Polish Radio, Voice of Russia and NHK on the station in the past.

Spanning an area of intense cultural, political and media diversity, the station allows broadcasters to inform and entertain the Israeli and Palestinian populations on air - it has two FM transmitters in Ramallah and in northern Israel - as well as being available via the internet.

WRN Network Voices: Coverage of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Monday, 9th of November 1989 is a date that resonates with many of our European listeners. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a great victory for many that were segregated by the division of East and West. Built by the German Democratic Republic in 1961, the wall enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin.

Several of WRN's content clients covered the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall, including, of course, Deutsche Welle, Voice of Russia, Radio Romania International and Radio France International. Programmes focused on the perspectives of people who were separated by the wall at the time and those who witnessed the fall.

WRN Round Up of 2009
As the year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the achievements and successes of the previous 12 months. At a time of global economic recession in which most other companies are contracting, WRN has been expanding and 2009 marks a year of milestones for the company, beginning with the appointment of David Treadway to the role of Managing Director in February. Under his steerage, WRN acquired broadcast services company TSI Broadcast in April, following which we have seen a dramatic expansion in our product and service portfolio of Managed Services for television.

We have also made a large investment in enterprise class solutions and a range of content management services including encoding, transcoding, re-purposing, storage and archiving. In addition, WRN is now fully HD capable.

There have been a multitude of highlights of 2009 and these have included winning new clients such as Warner Bros, Manchester United TV, IMG; the launch of the new corporate website; securing a major multiple channel playout deal for a household brand and a major downlink contract with a new DTH platform in Africa, distribution on which we will be offering to WRN clients in the new year.

Over the coming few months you will begin to see WRN adopt a new brand identity that fully reflects our commitment to radio and television broadcast services and distribution worldwide. We will also be launching our brand new Media Centre, which incorporates dedicated ingest suites, state of the art technology and a client viewing area.

WRN would like to thank you, our clients, for your ongoing commitment to WRN. You are the lifeblood of the business and, without you, we would not be able to build on our successes. We look forward to continuing to deliver you quality and innovative services at cost-effective prices into 2010 and beyond.

Christmas Playout Offer
WRN is pleased to announce a special Christmas offer on ingest and playout services.

WRN will be offering high specification playout solutions for cut price rates to broadcasters who will come forward and sign a contract before the end of January.

Clients will benefit from the investment made into WRN's New Media Centre, which comprises state-of-the-art broadcast facilities. WRN utilises the Pharos Mediator 4 platform which offers advanced workflow, search tools and services to retrieve, promote and deliver content for playout and beyond to VOD and mobile services.

Our Harmonic multiplexer platform enables clients to mux and re-mux any signals in any format, be it MPEG 2 or MPEG 4 and deliver over IP circuits for uplink worldwide, whilst our Omneon servers are the most robust in the market.

To take advantage of this fantastic offer and for further information, contact sales@wrn.org

Is 2010 The Year for 3D?

Although it's been only three years since HD transmissions were first aired on Sky Digital in 2006, there is no doubt that HD has become the industry standard for new television services launching in the UK.

However, latest industry whispers at events such as this year's MIPCOM and IBC suggest that broadcasters' focus is switching to 3D.

Rumours abound that Sky is interested in carrying 10 x 3D channels, most predictably in the movie and sports genres, and it is thought that the Hollywood studios are keen to exploit any new potential revenue opportunities through Pay TV windows. Combine this with the fact that more and more manufacturers are releasing 3D products (Sky is already considering marketing polarising filters that will allow consumers to experience 3D TV through their existing sets) and there is a compelling argument that the transition to 3D is well under way.

The key broadcast event of 2010 will be the FIFA World Cup, which, for the first time in history, will be broadcast using next generation 3D technology. FIFA announced on 3rd December that it had signed a media rights agreement with Sony, an official FIFA partner, to deliver 3D images for up to 25 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

3D is here to stay - how quickly it grows is anyone's guess - but with some major suppliers already preparing their 3D offering it could soon be a key discussion point for all broadcasters and content owners.

To discuss your 3D requirements with WRN, please contact sales@wrn.org

Limited Opportunity to Launch Radio Channel on Sky
In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky. Citing limitations of legacy set top box capacity, BSkyB announced a closure of the platform.

Since then, any new radio broadcaster wishing to access the EPG has had to undertake a private purchase of an EPG number from an existing station on the platform. These opportunities have been very few and far between.

However, WRN has a window for radio broadcasters wishing to access the Sky platform, which is still the leading digital DTH platform in 9 million homes in the UK and Ireland.

For more information please contact sales@wrn.org

WRN to Unveil New Media Centre
WRN will soon be announcing the launch of a brand new, state-of-the-art broadcast facility, a Media Centre which incorporates the latest Pharos Mediator 4 platform, Harmonic multiplexers and Omneon video servers.

The enterprise class Pharos Mediator 4 software places WRN ahead of its competitors and enables it to provide clients with the latest in playout content management and automation technology, such as advanced workflow, search tools and services to retrieve, promote and deliver content for playout and beyond to VOD and mobile services.

The Harmonic multiplexer platform will offer clients the ability to mux and re-mux any signals in any format, be it MPEG 2 or MPEG 4 and deliver over IP circuits for uplink worldwide. Omneon video servers are widely renowned as the most robust and stable on the market.

The new WRN Media Centre will be launched early 2010. For more information or to organise a viewing, contact sales@wrn.org

Archive Forum 2010
Representatives from the WRN Sales Team will be attending next year's Digital Archive Forum, a Broadcast event geared towards broadcasters, producers, distributors and anyone who is interested in successfully digitising, repurposing and monetising their content assets.

A real desire exists to tap into the long tail of content and secure valuable new revenue streams. At the same time, digital acceleration has revolutionised opportunities for consumers to interact with content and engage with audiences. The need to source lower cost creative resources in production ensures that getting your archive strategy on-track is a key priority in the shift to the new media ecology.

The Archive Forum event will provide an invaluable resource for the new realities of making, managing and distributing content.

For more information, see www.digitalarchiveforum.com or, to schedule a meeting with WRN at the event, contact sales@wrn.org

We have also made a large investment in enterprise class solutions and a range of content management services including encoding, transcoding, re-purposing, storage and archiving. In addition, WRN is now fully HD capable. Of course, radio is and always will be part of our core business and remains an important part of both our heritage and our future. Short Wave is still seen by many of our clients to be a vital technology to reach large regions and closed societies and, for clients such as NHK, who expanded their shortwave services this year, it is a hugely important part of the WRN inventory.

There have been a multitude of highlights of 2009 and these have included winning new clients such as Warner Bros., Manchester United TV, IMG, West African Democracy Radio and Radio Mada; the launch of the new corporate and listener website, the successful launch of the groundbreaking Radio With Pictures product for RNW's Arabic service and the securing of a major contract with a new DTH platform in Africa, distribution on which we will be offering to WRN clients in the new year.

Rare Opportunity to Access DAB in London
WRN is pleased to announce that it has a very rare and exciting opportunity for radio clients wishing to access DAB in London - one of the most sought after cities for broadcasters, both large and small.
Currently, the only way to obtain a radio licence to broadcast to London is to buy one. There is no FM or DAB capacity available in London, so a new entrant needs to purchase an existing station or contract for bandwidth.

However, WRN has an opportunity for clients to access DAB on one of the three greater London multiplexes serving a total audience of some ten million potential listeners.

This offer is only available for a very limited period. Therefore, if you are interested in taking DAB in London, please contact the WRN Sales team as soon as possible at sales@wrn.org

Limited Opportunity to Launch Radio Channel on Sky
In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky.

Absolute 80s to Replace Xtreme
December will see the launch of a new Absolute Radio station - Absolute 80s. Replacing the channel Absolute Xtreme, which launched in 2005 as Virgin Radio Xtreme, Absolute 80s will be positioned as a pop and rock music station aimed at 30 to 54-year-olds. Initially the station will be available on DAB in London and online and digital TV nationwide throughout the UK, with the possibility of expanded DAB transmission in other parts of the country later.

Programming previously offered by Absolute Xtreme will morph into the station's newly launched dabbl offering. The station will fine-tune its music policy to include new music, live music and tracks from the 90s and Noughties. Dabbl, Absolute Radio's digital radio station, was launched earlier this year with a focus on live-music programming and will broadcast online and on DAB 24 hours a day across Swindon, Bristol and Essex and from 7pm - 6am in London.

The launch of Absolute 80s brings the number of stations operated by Absolute Radio to four. It already runs Absolute Radio, Absolute Radio Classic Rock and dabbl.

WRN provides Absolute with uplink and capacity services on the Eurobird1 satellite for distribution of Absolute Radio, Absolute Xtreme and Absolute Classic Rock on Sky Digital.

Radio Australia Celebrates 70th Anniversary
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Radio Australia, the international radio and online service of the Australian national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

This December the septuagenarian broadcaster will celebrate 70 years of being at the forefront of covering news and current affairs, political and social change and key events in Asia and the Pacific. There will be festivities across the airwaves, along with contributions from listeners and partners around the world.

Radio Australia has long been a client of WRN's; who provides it not only with coverage on the WRN English networks for Europe and North America, but dedicated backhaul and satellite services.

For further information on Radio Australia's 70th anniversary please visit their website blogs.radioaustralia.net.au/70 or tune in via WRN at www.wrn.org/listeners/#schedules

Radio Academy Hall of Fame
WRN recently hosted several clients at Sir Terry Wogan's induction into the Radio Academy Hall Of Fame as well as being awarded the PRS John Peel Outstanding Contribution To Music Award presented by Take That front-man Gary Barlow.

A very emotional Chris Evans honoured the life and career of Sir Terry, whilst fellow presenters Chris Moyles and Christian O Connell paid tribute.

WRN was very pleased to be able to treat clients to this the fantastic occasion, not only to see one of the great stars of the airwaves (and a British national treasure) accept the accolade, but also for the opportunity to network with the cream of the UK radio industry.

The Radio Academy is a registered charity dedicated to the encouragement, recognition and promotion of excellence in UK broadcasting and audio production.

WRN Incorporates Pharos Mediator 4.2
WRN has closed a deal with the integrated media management, workflow and playout company, Pharos, to incorporate the latest Pharos Mediator 4.2 system as part of its company-wide commitment to providing high quality TV ingest and playout solutions.

On the back of the recent TSI acquisition, WRN is using its larger scale integrated services environment as a key value add to both new customer and its existing client base.

Mediator is content agnostic and allows WRN to create workflows and content services that match the unique needs of individual clients.

If you are interested in discussing WRN's media management capabilities, contact sales@wrn.org.

Access DTH in Italy via Sky Italia

WRN is pleased to announce that this month it has successfully launched the Word Television Network onto Italy's premiere DTH platform, Sky Italia, on EPG 823. As The Word Network's chosen provider to backhaul its content on transatlantic fibre and uplink onto Eurobird 1 for the Sky platform in the UK, WRN was the natural choice for helping The Word to expand its global reach. Capitalising on its good relationship with Sky Italia, WRN provided The Word with a full consultancy service to ensure a successful launch.

SKY Italia is an Italian digital satellite television platform owned by News Corporation, which launched on 31 July 2003. It is similar in many ways to BSkyB's Sky Digital in the United Kingdom and Ireland and like that network, it is a major sports broadcaster.

WRN can provide consultancy on worldwide DTH platform launches and provide a full, technical turnkey solution for broadcasters wishing to reach other markets.

If you would like to discuss you global broadcasting aspirations, including accessing DTH, please contact
sales@wrn.org

Freesat Exceeds 600,000
Receivers
Freesat is a BBC and ITV-backed satellite programming system that provides viewers with the first HD digital TV and Radio with complete interactivity from one box. It was launched 18 months ago in May 2008. The system has now sold over 600,000 set-top boxes in total, and 200,000 were sold during the summer period as more and cheaper receivers came onto the market.

The number of integrated TV sets that are now available with Freesat pre-installed has helped to push the number of sales up. These numbers go some way to showing that, despite the climate of economic uncertainty, the outlook for Freesat remains strong with continuing sales from customers new to satellite TV and radio and from those wishing to make use of their existing satellite dish.
Freesat is free of charge as part of the UK's commitment to make a core number of channels available to the whole population ahead of the nation's analogue switch off, which is already well-advanced but which will see the final regions of the UK go dark during 2012.
BSkyB also has a ‘Freesat-by-Sky' product and service but does not reveal those numbers. Sky has some 9.45m paying subscribers.

WRN can guide broadcasters wishing to go onto Freesat through the launch process, having already successful placed eight channels on the EPG. WRN provides its clients with uplink and capacity services on the Eurobird satellite (used to feed Freesat) and EPG services. Sportel 2009
Representatives from the WRN Sales and Business Development Team attended this year's SportelMonaco, the 20th anniversary of the ever growing Convention, the world's largest and most important market for international sports content executives

This years Sportel was launched against the backdrop of the first ever live streaming of an England International Football Match. The rights holders hailed the success of the match with 200,000 people paying to view the match online; in total an estimated 500,000 people watched the game. The rights owners (Kentaro) have so far been reticent about revealing the specific amount of revenue generated through steaming the game online, but with the BBC only offering £900,000 for the rights, it is assumed that it was a financial success, and proved that viewers are willing to consume their media in this way.

However UEFA urged caution, stating that the revenue generated for the rights of the matches should be optimised, rather than maximised, to ensure that as many fans as possible have access to the matches.

Attendance appeared to be down on last year, but with many exhibitors maintaining their presence including the NBA, Eurosport, the BBC and MP Silva, there was lots to interest the attendees.

Even after the tough year Setanta have had, it still managed to host its legendary party at the Monaco Irish Bar.

Key topics of discussion included maximising content available to fans through the digitalising of archive content and the expansion of broadcast coverage into new territories.

WRN Acquires TSI Broadcast
In April 2009 WRN acquired TSI Broadcast, the TV ingest and playout company. The acquisition gives WRN an excellent platform for growth by expanding the service portfolio alongside its established broadcast management and solutions products, as well as providing the opportunity to compete for larger projects. WRN will now offer its clients a more comprehensive product inventory in ingest, playout, streaming, encoding and transcoding.

David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN, says of the deal: "As a reasonably small but competitive player, WRN is already internationally renowned in the radio sector, although traditionally less known for our TV services despite the fact that we already have a substantial TV client list. The acquisition of TSI sends out a clear message to the international broadcast industry that TV is now very much part of our inventory, with playout, streaming and encoding services at the forefront of the services we offer. We look forward to working with TSI's existing clients alongside WRN's established customer base and further building on both companies' reputations for innovation, flexibility, excellence and service delivery.

If you would like to know more about the acquisition, or you are a TSI customer who would like to meet the WRN Team, please contact sales@wrn.org to make an appointment.

Mass Encoding Project for MUTV
WRN has successfully completed a mass encoding project and the instigation of a bespoke asset management solution for Manchester United TV (MUTV). MUTV approached WRN's Content Management Services arm for a solution for ingest of its significant tape archive, consisting of Premier and Champions League football footage, reserve matches, Youth Team games and training sessions. WRN provided a workflow evaluation in order to ascertain the best technology solution for MUTV going forward.

As part of the deal, WRN ingested tape assets to IMX 30, QuickTime and the content was then stored within a bespoke digital archive, designed especially by WRN. Once the assets had been processed, WRN created two LTO4 data tapes for deep archive and disaster recovery purposes. A WRN-provided asset management solution was instigated once the system was successfully integrated into MUTV's facilities. The system creates low-resolution proxy files that enable MUTV staff to browse the archive, access content from their desktop and edit the material.

Workflows will be improved as MUTV's editorial team will have access to the digital content library, whilst subscribers to MUTV will benefit from the availability of additional, reversioned content from the MUTV archives. Importantly, a turnkey storage and asset management solution gives MUTV the ability to speed up the productivity and quality of the channel and maximise efficiency by reducing tape-handling.

Summer Sale on Eurobird 1
Satellite Uplink and Capacity
WRN has a limited opportunity for TV broadcasters wishing to access the Sky and / or Freesat platforms to access cheaper satellite space on the Eurobird 1 satellite for any new contracts signed in August.

Eurobird 1 is the satellite that is used to feed Sky Digital, the UK's premier DTH platform, with in excess of 1 million subscribers. Eurobird 1 is also used to feed Freesat, the new digital terrestrial platform launched in May 2008, making HD TV available to 98% of UK households, some of which have previously been unable to benefit from this technology due to coverage, price or subscription contracts. Since the launch of Freesat, over 500,000 receivers have been sold to British homes.

WRN Improves Digital Workflow for Manchester United TV

London, September 28, 2009: The global broadcast and transmission solutions company, WRN, today announces that it has successfully completed a mass encoding project and the instigation of a bespoke asset management solution for Manchester United TV (MUTV).

MUTV approached WRN's Content Management Services arm (formerly known as TSI Broadcast) for a solution for ingest of its significant tape archive, consisting of Premier and Champions League football footage, reserve matches, Youth Team games and training sessions. WRN provided a workflow evaluation in order to ascertain the best technology solution for MUTV going forward.

As part of the deal, WRN ingested tape assets to IMX 30, QuickTime and the content was then stored within a bespoke digital archive, especially designed by WRN. Once the assets had been processed, WRN created two LTO4 data tapes for deep archive and disaster recovery purposes.

Once the system was successfully integrated into MUTV's facilities, a WRN-provided asset management solution was instigated.

"Our contract with WRN means that we now have a new workflow solution that will not only improve the delivery of our content, but also create a platform to improve our productivity and performance at a technical level. WRN's expert consultancy and insight into digital workflows has enabled MUTV to integrate a technology solution that increases our efficiency and most importantly, improves the quality of services we deliver to our subscribers," added Sameer Pabari, Managing Director, MUTV.

"The deal with MUTV is further evidence that video encoding is an essential part of our business strategy and is a natural progression following the recent acquisition of TSI Broadcast. It is also proof of our ability to offer full-service digital workflow solutions in a growing market sector," commented David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN. "We are pleased and delighted to now count MUTV as part of WRN's prestigious and expanding client portfolio."

For more information on WRN's services, please contact sales@wrn.org

Limited Opportunity to Launch Radio Channel on Sky

In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky. Citing limitations of legacy set top box capacity, BSkyB announced a closure of the platform.

Since then, any new radio broadcaster wishing to access the EPG has had to undertake a private purchase of an EPG number from an existing station on the platform. These opportunities have been very few and far between.

However, WRN has a window for radio broadcasters wishing to access the Sky platform, which is still the leading digital DTH platform in 9.5 million homes in the UK and Ireland. The channel is either available for sale or for hire on a 24/7 basis.

For more information please contact sales@wrn.org

WADR Launches on Sirius 4 Satellite for
Africa

WRN recently launched West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) onto Sirius 4. Covering the majority of Africa, Sirius 4 is an attractive platform for broadcasters wishing to widen their reach across the continent.

WADR is a trans-territorial radio station, set up to facilitate the exchange of development information between and among countries of West Africa, including Mauritania, Chad and Cameroon. In the station's first phase, it targeted mainly the Mano River Union countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

An undertaking of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), WADR is conceived to be the hub for a West African network of public, private and community radio stations; creating an avenue for networking between these radio stations and a channel for dialogue among peoples of the respective countries they serve.

Launched in 2007 and with a planned 15 year lifetime, Sirius 4 satellite has six transponders, some of which are already contracted to provide DTH bouquets - mainly in South Africa and Nigeria. There are also a growing number of religious neighbourhoods, making the satellite an appealing proposition for Christian clients.

Sirius 4 also presents broadcasters with a low cost opportunity to reach Africa - hitherto very difficult to access via ku band capacity. It is located at 4.8° East and uses Ku, which can be received with 90cm dishes.

When IMG came to WRN at very short notice to ask if we could provide shortwave services to transmit Premier League football match commentary into China, WRN was only too pleased to be able to help.

Within 24 hours of the initial request, WRN was able to arrange for the transmitters to be in place and the first match of twelve, Manchester City versus Arsenal, was broadcast on 12th September. Further matches continue to be broadcast at weekends.

IMG is the world's premier and most diversified sports, entertainment and media enterprise and is the largest independent sports producer in the world and a global leader in multi-genre production.

If you are thinking of using shortwave services for transmission to any part of the world, please contact sales@wrn.org to consult with our specialists.

DVB and Channel 4

Highly Commended at AIB Awards 2009
Last week, WRN gathered with over 200 industry professionals to celebrate the success in international TV, radio and online production at the AIB's International Media Excellence Awards 2009.

The event, which took place in the atmospheric surroundings of the LSO St Lukes in Shoreditch, was hosted by Bloomberg TV anchor Francine Lacqua and was attended by senior executives, producers and journalists from media organisations around the world.

Categories covered by the ‘AIBs' include awards for radio and television, current affairs, coverage of a single news event, creative features and personality of the year, as well as awards for innovation in marketing, use of technology and cross media productions.

WRN was pleased to host its long time client, Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), who were in attendance along with the Channel 4 Dispatches Team, who used material shot by DVB for the programme entitled ‘Orphans of the Burma Cyclone', which was awarded Highly Commended in Best Current Affairs Documentary in the television category.

WRN's first engagement with DVB came through our work with World View, the group of human rights broadcasters that was connected to the Nobel Prize Committee. WRN has a special interest in human rights broadcasting and much experience in reaching closed societies. WRN has been involved with DVB in its present incarnation since its inception in 1996 - beginning with providing DVB Radio with satellite and shortwave broadcast services to Burma and later providing satellite uplink and capacity for its TV services.

Access DTH in Italy via Sky Italia

As The Word Network's chosen provider to backhaul its content on transatlantic fibre and uplink onto Eurobird 1 for the Sky platform in the UK, WRN was the natural choice for helping The Word to expand its global reach. Capitalising on its good relationship with Sky Italia, WRN provided The Word with a full consultancy service to ensure a successful launch.

Sky Italia is an Italian digital satellite television platform owned by News Corporation, which launched on 31 July 2003. It is similar in many ways to BSkyB's Sky Digital in the United Kingdom and Ireland and, like that network, it is a major sports broadcaster.

WRN can provide consultancy on worldwide DTH platform launches and provide a full, technical turnkey solution for broadcasters wishing to reach other markets.

NME Radio Launches Direct Buy App on iPhone

NME Radio recently launched its dedicated iPhone app, available from iTunes, which allows users to listen to NME Radio via their iPhone, as well as texting the studio direct.

NME Radio is the first UK radio station to offer a direct buy (via iTunes) facility of tracks played on air. All In Media, a company working in partnership with WRN, developed the application on behalf of NME, and WRN is supplying the streaming of content to the iphone using high quality AAC+ audio coding.

Since it's launch in 2007, WRN has provided NME Radio with satellite capacity for Sky and Freesat and web streaming for the NME website.

Speaking of the new app, NME Radio managing and programming director Sammy Jacob said it will benefit listeners and artists. "This app is great news for the music industry, artists and audience alike as it allows for impulse purchase and download of tracks played on the station. It is, as far as I am aware, the first UK radio station app to have such a facility," he said.

He added: "Apart from providing increased exposure to new and emerging artists, it will contribute to revenues. I believe stuff like this is essential to the future of the music industry."

WRN is able to help any broadcaster wishing to develop and launch their own iphone app. For more information, contact sales@wrn.org

Voice of Truth Radio Launches on Sky

Voice of Truth Radio is a fledgling radio station recently launched onto Sky with the help of WRN. Part of the House of Praise Mission Family in South London, Voice of Truth came to WRN with no experience in radio broadcasting. WRN has provided extensive consultancy work to get the station up and running, including the building of the station facility and sourcing key staff.

Since the closure of the EPG in October 2007, broadcasters have only been able to gain access to the Sky platform through the trading of EPG numbers. WRN was able to help Voice of Truth secure an EPG in a private novation deal, managing both the legal and technical aspects in order to facilitate the launch.

Voice of Truth soft-launched onto Sky on the 16th July and is currently preparing for the hard launch of the station later this month.

Andrew Adeleke, the Director of Voice of Truth Radio and resident Pastor of the House of Praise, said "We have had a 100% positive experience and I highly recommend WRN to would-be broadcast clients."

WRN looks forward to taking Voice multi-platform in the future.

RNW Launches Arabic Service on FM in Israel

WRN is pleased to announce that, as of the 1st October, RNW's Arabic service is now broadcasting on weekdays on a joint Palestinian / Israeli FM station which covers central Israel, the West Bank and the northern part of the Gaza strip, as well as the west of Jordan. WRN was responsible for securing the broadcast for RNW; it has a long standing relationship with the station, having successfully launched Polish Radio, Voice of Russia and NHK on this platform in the past.

Spanning an area of intense cultural, political and media diversity, the joint Palestinian / Israeli FM station allows broadcasters to inform and entertain the Israeli and Palestinian populations on air. The station features content from international public service broadcasters, music programmes and talk shows in Arabic and Hebrew that touch upon issues of common interest to Israeli and Palestinian audiences.

RNW is the Dutch international service and its Arabic service offers independent information on a wide range of subjects including the Arab community in the Netherlands, issues concerning Islam, women, human rights, etc. RNW's Arabic programme 'Huna Amsterdam' seeks to bridge the gap between the Netherlands and the Arab world.

Radio Listening via Digital Platforms Continues to Grow

Radio listening via digital platforms continues to increase in popularity, making up more than a fifth of all radio listening in the second quarter of the year, according to the latest RAJAR results released in the UK in August.

Digital platforms now account for 21.1% of all radio listening, up from 20.1% in the previous quarter and 17.9% in the same period in 2008.

DAB is the most popular digital platform for users and accounts for a 13.1% share of listening, up from 11% last year, ahead of digital TV (3.6%) and internet (2.2%).

Freesat Exceeds 600,000 Receivers

Freesat is a BBC and ITV-backed satellite programming system that provides viewers with the first HD digital TV and Radio with complete interactivity from one box. It was launched 18 months ago in May 2008. The system has now sold about 600,000 set-top boxes in total, and 200,000 were sold during the summer period as more and cheaper receivers came onto the market.

For more information please contact the Sales team on sales@wrn.org.

WRN provided a full streaming service, including encoding and publishing the link to the HPower website. WRN was able to provide comprehensive statistical reporting after the event.

Our packages allow free to the end user models, subscription models, content management and digital rights management.

Radio Guangdong Celebrates 60th Anniversary

For many years, in collaboration with WRN, the English service of Radio Guangdong has been instrumental in bringing news and views from this Southern Chinese province to a worldwide audience. The colourful, informative shows feature film stars and celebrities from the region, as well as people from outside of China who have decided to make Guangzhou their home.

This year, Radio Guangdong, along with the rest of China, celebrated the Peoples' Republic of China's 60th anniversary. In recognition of this, WRN focused an entire week of special mini feature programmes from Radio Guangdong throughout the week of September 26th - October 3rd, bringing more of the Cantonese sounds and flavours to audiences around the world.

Competitions were run to encourage listener feedback by email and were extremely successful, with comments from listeners as far flung as Germany, India, Ireland, New York, Malaysia, South Africa, and Ethiopia, amongst others. Perhaps the last word should go to this listener, from Trinidad:

"I wish to express my great appreciation to WRN for bringing Radio Guangdong and a slice of China each week to its worldwide listeners. It is indeed quite refreshing to hear domestic news and features from this southerly Chinese province of Guangzhou. How interesting it is to hear foreigners and locals alike speak on their fondness for living in this part of China with its various customs, unique cuisine, musical delights and other attractions to savour. Congratulations to Radio Guangdong for keeping us informed weekly on their part of the World! I hope soon they can be heard daily!"

Irish in Africa to celebrate St Patrick's Day next to their shortwave radios listening to RTÉ

London, March 13 2009: St Patrick's Day will see the launch of a daily shortwave radio broadcast from RTÉ to the Irish in Africa.
This link with home is in response to many requests from Irish people scattered throughout the continent, and working in fields such as aid, peace-keeping, construction projects, and missionary work. According to the Irish government there are many thousands of Irish working in Africa.

Although RTÉ has long been available on satellite and via the internet, those in remote regions of Africa have asked for old fashioned short-wave transmissions which will reach portable radio sets in areas that do not even have electricity supplies let alone easy access to satellites and the web. The main coverage area will be West, Central and East Africa.
From March 17, every evening they will be able to hear a one hour selection of RTÉ radio programmes from the day at 1930-2030 UTC/GMT on 6220 kilohertz. That will be 730pm at Ryan's Bar in Accra, Ghana and 1030pm at O'Willies Pub in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The transmission will be provided by WRN, the London headquartered international radio and TV transmission company that has been transmitting RTÉ around the world since 1994. WRN's Director of Development Jeff Cohen said "it is a privilege to continue our long association with RTÉ and broadcast this important link with home to Irish people who are doing such valuable work in Africa".

Said JP Coakley, RTÉ's Head of Operations, "RTÉ ceased its worldwide shortwave service in 2004 due to the growth of technologies such as the internet for serving the diaspora. However, Africa obviously presents particular challenges and in 2004 we also introduced a specific service based on delivery to small satellite radios called Worldspace. However, this service has effectively ceased for the moment so we are reintroducing a shortwave service to Africa - we want Irish people there to know that RTÉ values the connection with them as much as they do".

This and other RTÉ programmes will continue to be available on WRN satellite services around the world and to Africa five times daily (details at www.wrn.org).

NHK Radio Japan takes new bouquet of WRN services

London, July 1 2009: The international arm of NHK, Japan's renowned public service broadcaster, has recently contracted for an increased range of services with WRN, the London based broadcasting and transmission company.

Starting from the summer season of 2009, WRN is providing new platforms for Radio Japan's Arabic services to be heard in the Middle East via a 1000kW Medium Wave station on 1377kHz AM, and on FM for the Palestinian Territories, parts of Israel and Jordan. This adds to WRN's existing agreement to place NHK's Arabic programming on its own station "Sawt Al-Alam" (Arabic for "Voice of the World") which is an aggregation of programming from leading world broadcasters and is available on the Arabsat, Hot Bird and Nilesat satellite services.

Mr Yuki Sakagami, Associate Director of NHK's International Planning & Broadcasting Department said, "Within current media development in the world of international broadcasting, NHK World Radio Japan is now taking the initiative to broadcast its programmes on the most suitable media, including FM and Medium Wave, in each target area, and commencing these new transmission platforms in the Middle East is one such example".

NHK's Russian language programming is now heard on WRN's Russian channel "Vsimirniya Radioset" (which is Russian for World Radio Network) on both satellite and locally on 738 AM (Medium Wave) in Moscow. Karl Miosga, Chairman of WRN, said "Radio Japan adds the new dimension of a Japanese perspective to the programming we offer in Russia and we are delighted they join us as a partner broadcaster with their extremely high quality content".

Meanwhile in South Asia, Radio Japan in Bengali, Hindi and Urdu is now available via one of the shortwave relay facilities offered by WRN. Jeff Cohen, who looks after shortwave transmission at WRN, says, "Though use of shortwave has been declining in recent years in western nations it is still essential for reaching Asia and this is attested by the high demand for frequency spectrum in the region".

Atsushi Terauchi, Senior Manager at NHK's International Planning & Broadcasting Department, spoke of the general widening of NHK's use of relay facilities, "It is essential that the 18 language services of Radio Japan from NHK World, reach the highest possible audience worldwide. So we constantly review transmission platforms and add new ways that audiences can tune to our programmes".

David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN, expressed his delight at the new business with NHK, "We really appreciate the confidence of Japan's public broadcaster in WRN shown by this significant increase in the global transmission services we provide".

Integrated company offers full-service digital workflow for TV and radio transmission.

London, April 21 2009: International broadcast and transmission company WRN today announces the acquisition of TSI Broadcast, the TV ingest and playout company. The deal will enable WRN to offer a state-of-the-art playout system with industry-leading hardware and software solutions.

Over the coming months the two companies will integrate under the WRN banner. The acquisition of TSI Broadcast provides WRN with an excellent platform for growth by expanding the service portfolio alongside its established broadcast management and solutions products as well as providing the opportunity to compete for larger projects. WRN will now offer its clients a more comprehensive product inventory in ingest, playout, streaming, encoding and transcoding.

David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN, says of the deal: "As a reasonably small but
competitive player, WRN is already internationally renowned in the radio sector, although traditionally less known for our TV services despite the fact that we already have a substantial TV client list. The acquisition of TSI sends out a clear message to the international broadcast industry that TV is now very much part of our agenda, with playout, streaming and encoding services at the forefront of the services we offer. We look forward to working with TSI's existing clients alongside WRN's established
customer base and further building on both companies' reputations for innovation, flexibility, excellence and service delivery."

Tim Ashburner, Director of Technology for WRN, adds: "The acquisition supports our strategic move to a digital workflow for existing clients as well as expanding the range of services we can offer new clients. It allows us to expand further into the sector in the coming months and confirms WRN's position as an expert in both radio and TV transmission and playout."

Nick Doff, Managing Director of TSI, says: "We were very pleased to have found a buyer that is such a great fit with the TSI ethos. WRN is highly respected in the industry, with over 16 years' experience under its belt, and I'm sure that it will make a great success of the purchase."

TSI's Dave Travis will be joining WRN as part of the deal to expand its depth of knowledge in the tapeless workflow. It is not anticipated there will be any job cuts resulting from the acquisition.

The integration process begins immediately and is expected to complete by September, at which point all playout and encoding services will operate from WRN's established base in Vauxhall, South London.

TSI's customers will transition to the WRN network from early May. There will be no gap in service.

About WRN
WRN is a leading international television and radio transmission company offering a comprehensive portfolio of broadcast services including satellite uplink and capacity services, TV ingest and playout, Web / IPTV services, station start-up consultancy and channel management, EPG brokerage, studio facilities, DRM Digital Radio and FM / AM / SW airtime brokerage.

About TSI
TSI Broadcast was formed in September 2006, when a group of like-minded media professionals led by TSI Transmission's former MD, Nick Doff, formed a company to buy TSI Transmission out of administration. A period of six months of redevelopment took place during which complete development and rebuild of the TSI facility was led by Dave Travis. TSI Broadcast broadened the company's services to include content management and delivery. Over the past two years, TSI has continued to grow and take on new clients, including substantial amounts of work for BT Vision, Top Up TV, Warner Bros, Camelot and Ocean Finance and a number of other key clients. www.tsibroadcast.com

Freesat Reaches 100,000 Units

Freesat, the new digital satellite TV service that launched in May this year, has announced it has topped 100,000 units sold across the UK. The sales have been helped by the major sporting events during the summer such as Euro 2008, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games as well as blockbusters like King Kong, which have been shown in HD.

Sales are set to continue as we look forward to an autumn schedule boasting UEFA Champions' League, England World Cup qualifiers and FA Cup football on ITV HD, exclusive to Freesat.

Freesat makes HDTV available to 98% of UK households, some of whom have previously been unable to benefit from this technology, without the need for a subscription or a contract. Viewers need an HD digital box that connects to an HD-ready TV or a TV with built-in Freesat. Freesat comes with its own inter-viewer interactivity, ‘red' button functionality and EPG service, all through a standard broadband connection.

WRN can guide broadcasters wishing to go onto Freesat through the launch process, having already successful placed six channels on the EPG, with more coming shortly. WRN provides its clients with uplink and capacity services on the Eurobird satellite (used to feed Freesat) and EPG services.
No Sign of Credit Crunch at MIPCOM 2008

Whilst the banks crashed and burned and newspaper headlines continued to count the ongoing death tally of the credit crunch, there were no signs of a downturn in TV sales at this year's MIP. With record attendance on day three of the conference, this year's was the busiest ever, attracting 13,588 participants, 4,573 international buyers, 4,517 companies and 11779 exhibitors.

WRN's Head of Sales and Business Development, Sophie Wilson, was on the ground in Cannes, attending what is often cited as THE conference for television industry professionals. MIPCOM is the global content event for creating, co-producing, buying, selling, financing and distributing entertainment content across all platforms. It provides the key decision-makers in the TV, film, digital and audiovisual content, production and distribution industries with the only market conference and networking forum to discover future trends and trade content rights on a global level.

This year's conference placed a particular emphasis on digital content, with Michael Eisner (former CEO of the Walt Disney Company and driving force behind on-line content companies Vuguru and Veoh) sharing his vision, in his keynote speech, of a digital entertainment industry that brings the consumer, the producer and the distributor closer together. A week of new-media oriented conferences followed. MIP closed with a keynote delivered by Gary Wang, the founder and CEO of Tudou, the Chinese answer to YouTube, which focused on digital and UGC in China.
WRN Appoints New Operations Manager

WRN is pleased to announce the latest addition to its growing team. Michael Ward, formerly of Sislink, has joined WRN as Operations Manager to head up the Technical Department and play a major role in the strategic development of the company and its technical services.

Michael began his career as an apprentice at Telecine in the early 1990's and worked his way up to MCR shift leader. He left Telecine in 2002 to join Sislink, Europe's largest satellite uplink fleet, where he helped develop the MCR into one of the busiest in the world.

Michael says: "working at Sislink was a rewarding time spent developing my skills in technical management and satellite uplinking. I am confident that these skills will come to great use at WRN and I am very happy to be a part of a team that is always at the forefront of new technologies."

Michael will coordinate the daily operations of WRN's renowned technical team, continuing to ensure that our clients always receive the best possible service.

If you would like to meet with Michael, or any other member of the WRN team, please contact the WRN Sales Team at sales@wrn.org.

Sky Surpasses 9 Million Subscribers in the UK

At the end of October, BSkyB announced its subscribers had surpassed 9 million in the UK. The announcement comes after Sky published its results for this quarter. Coming in ahead of analysts expectations, Sky's net customer addition over the last three months has climbed to 93,000, bringing the total amount to 9.067m subscribers.

Despite negative projections in light of the credit crunch, these figures prove that Sky is still the premier DTH platform of choice in the UK. WRN boasts a portfolio of 25+ clients on the platform, including The Word Network and KICC TV.

The Digital Switchover in 2012 will require all 26 million UK households to select a Digital TV solution. Sky is without doubt making good progress in its HD product development as this past month of October has seen Sky giving a special promotional push to high definition, with lower box fees and a boost to the number of HD channels on offer. BSkyB is assured that it is in an advantageous position to add many more of those households to its subscribers list.

Despite Sky's closure of the EPG queue in October last year, WRN is able to help any broadcaster wishing to access the platform in the purchase or sub-lease of an EPG. WRN also provides satellite uplink, capacity and EPG management services and can consult on licensing and regulatory issues.

For further information on Sky and EPG services, please contact the WRN Sales Team on sales@wrn.org or call +44 (0) 20 7896 4020.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which host the awards ceremony, is the largest organisation of global broadcasters, with members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies. Sixty percent of the Board of Directors come from countries based outside of the USA.

Graham Pittman is the Director of the European Television Guild and has been on the judging panel for the International Emmys for many years. The Guild champions the causes of independent broadcasters and assists niche channels in all genres with licensing and compliance services, planning, platform expansion, distribution negotiations, and more.

Sophie Wilson was earlier this year selected to be a juror on the panel for the Semi-Finals in the Best Performance by an Actress category. She says: "Undergoing the judging process was a great experience as I got to interact with content in a way in which I'm not normally able to in a transmission context. I would like to thank Graham and Adrienne for this opportunity - I am very much looking forward to attending the awards ceremony with them later this month."
